Ammonites are perhaps the most widely known fossil, possessing a typically ribbed spiral form shelf. 
These creatures lived in the seas between 400 - 65 million years ago, when they become extinct along with the dinosaurs.
They belong to a group of predators known as cephalopods which includes their living relatives to the octopus, squid, cuttlefish and nautilus.

This specimen is from Agadir, Morocco.

First called Emmons stones, because of their resemblance to the rams horns of Ammon, the ancient Egyptian god of life and protection, they have been collected and prized because of their aesthetic and geometrical beauty for thousands of years. It wasn’t until the late 1700s that it was generally accepted that these rocks were the remains of once living organisms. .
